Iolite, also called cordierite, is strongly pleochroic — it reads blue, violet or pale yellow depending on the viewing direction. It is sometimes called the "Viking's compass," from the tradition that it was used at sea to read the direction of light. In Japan it was added to the March birthstones in the 2021 revision.
