A pearl is built inside a mollusc, layer upon layer of nacre — the only gem made by a living creature. Those layers interfere with light to create its particular soft lustre. It is the birthstone for June. Nacre is sensitive to acids and perspiration, so wipe pearls with a soft cloth after wearing.
