Birthstones are a long-standing way of choosing a piece: a stone tied to the month you were born. They remain a useful starting point, whether you are choosing a gift or something for yourself. Below is a month-by-month list, with links to the stones you can find in FUGA NY jewelry.
January to June
January — Garnet. We carry hessonite garnet, which reads honey to warm orange.
February — Amethyst. From pale lavender to deep violet. See amethyst, or moss amethyst for stones with moss-like inclusions.
March — Aquamarine, coral, bloodstone and iolite. We carry moss aquamarine and iolite.
April — Diamond and morganite. Not currently in our collection.
May — Emerald and jade. Also not currently in our collection. For green stones, see green opal or chrome diopside.
June — Pearl, moonstone and alexandrite. This month has the most choice with us: pearl, irregular baroque pearl, nucleus-free keshi pearl, and moonstone.
July to December
July — Ruby and sphene. Not currently in our collection.
August — Peridot, sardonyx and spinel. We carry spinel.
September — Sapphire and kunzite. Sapphire is far from only blue: see sapphire and multicolour sapphire.
October — Opal and tourmaline. Alongside play-of-colour opal, we carry blue opal and green opal.
November — Topaz and citrine. Not currently in our collection; for a warm golden tone, consider whiskey quartz.
December — Turquoise, lapis lazuli, zircon and tanzanite. We carry zircon, purple zircon and tanzanite.
Japan revised its birthstone list in 2021
Japan's birthstone list was revised in 2021 by three industry bodies, adding ten stones for the first time in roughly sixty years — from nineteen stones to twenty-nine.
Iolite was among them, added to March. It is strongly pleochroic, shifting between blue and violet as the angle changes, and we carry iolite jewelry. For anyone born in March, it is an alternative to aquamarine that did not exist on the list before.
